Organic agriculture as a tool for strengthening of food security

Annotation

The article considers peculiarities of environmental pollution in the world. The main sources of pollution in agriculture are highlighted in the work. The research questions the capability of traditional agriculture to secure humanity with food of appropriate quality. The study also analyzes level of use of mineral fertilizers and estimates the annual volume of pesticide trade in the world.

The position of Ukraine in the global food situation is determined on the basis of the index, founded on the principles of financial availability of products, food diversity, quality and safety of products. The article supplies comparison of that index in leading countries. It is determined that organic production is more loyal to the environment than traditional agriculture. Thus, the research determines position of organic agricultural production in the whole world and in Ukraine particularly.

According to the statistical data of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, it is noted that currently one observes a positive dynamics of increase in the number of organic farms. The work specifies the reasons for the increased popularity of the commodities, produced in conformity with organic standards. The author of the article singles out the ecological advantages of organic agriculture. It is shown that organic farming methods can reduce carbon emissions by 48-60%, compared to traditional agricultural production.

Basing on the results of themany-year research, it is substantiated organic farming methods provide benefits for soil fertility. The work also supplies official statistics on organic production. The study pays attention to the ecosystem principle of organic production methods, which reduces the level of peasants’ dependence on fuel and fertilizer prices. The advantages of organic agriculture for enhancing global food security are argued in the research.
