Annotation

Stained glass occupies a special place in the space of Lviv, among the various elements of the architectural decor. This kind of decoration is often used for create pointers, showcases, entrances to trade buildings etc. Each of these applications of stained glass requires a special approach.

Architectural space of the city is unique. It is characterized by special silhouettes, peculiar magnitude. However, even a small detail can become a tourist attraction of the city. Often, such elements are also stained glass elements.

In the context of Lviv, stained-glass windows play a special role. A special development of stained glass was observed at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the Art Nouveau. Even today contemporary artists use decorative elements of this style to create the stained glass.

Stained glass compositions are often used in decor of public institutions, offices, cafes and restaurants. Flowers, abstractions, or just geometric figures in their bright composition form a separate space.

A modern city can not be imagined without business, and, accordingly, advertising. Not surprisingly that stained glass art has found its place in this sphere, in particular, in signs that are often posted directly at the trading floor, or a showcase and a main entrance of cafes or restaurants. In this case, if tupical buildings are usually painted in monochrome pastel colors (sometimes with a combination of two or more tones), stained glass compositions are usually vivid and colorful. These stained-glass windows help to highlight the building on the background of urban fabric.

In addition of bright color, these stained-glass windows should also have a special location in city space. For better performance, the media carrier location relative should be perpendicular to motion of a potential client. The perpendicular arrangement of the signboard creates not only the conditions for light refraction, but also effectively attracts attention.

An example of such a color contrast with architectural facade is a stained-glass advertising signboard located on Staroyevreiska street in Lviv. It is adjusted on the walls of the souvenir shop. The stylized image of the gifts creates a contrast against the background of monotonous walls, thus accentuating the attention of street travelers. However, the thicker and less transparent glass is the better than more clear, because of its visual properties of giving a composition integrity. At the same time, if the stained glass deprived of transparency, it may lose its expressive qualities. Because the transition from one light environment to another - one of the main conditions for manifestation of the expressiveness of stained glass windows. Also important to note that it is advisable to highlight stained glass signboard, thus, it can perform its function in the evening.

Thus, in the city space, stained glass plays a special role. It is functions not only as a filling of window and door occupancy of churches, shops, cafes and restaurants, banks, etc. but also directly as a decoration of the facades, which attracts attention of passers-by and at the same time informing about the function of the building.

One of the main conditions for the clarity of the stained glass is the transition of light. In the case of stained glass in the windows, this condition is fulfilled from the outside to the interior (during the day) and from the interior to outside (at night). However, the use of stained glass in the form of a sign or a separate element of decor requires a special approach. In particular, it is important to emphasize not on the throughput of glass, but on the refraction of light. To do this, it's best to use a textured glass with a lower light throughput. It is also sometimes advisable to further highlight the stained glass for evening functioning, especially the part that illustrates the function of the building. This approach will not only help to highlight the stained glass against the background of monotonous architecture, but will also draw the attention of passers-by to the institution. A well-chosen composition of decorative stained glass can be an attraction for tourists.
